Code 415-50 Antique Walnut Wood Petrin from France, 19th Century
This beautifully hand carved antique French "Petrin" was used to store and knead bread dough. This particular petrin has nice thick proportions and is beautifully decorated. The upper portion has a central cartouche with a stylized leaf crown, a shield displaying two stars in the upper right, a single wing on the diagonal, and a single star at the bottom left. To either side is scrolling rinceau with beautiful details on the carved flowers and leaves. All of this is surrounded by scrolling acanthus leaves in a rectangular shape. The lower section rests within an area having a shaped and decorated, rectangular frieze (this doubles as a working drawer). There is also an acanthus leaf cartouche bearing a fleur-de-is at the center, with more acanthus leaf motifs to either side. Unusually, the corners are also decorated with acanthus leaf motifs, front and sides. There are baluster legs resting upon a shaped open rectangular apron. At the center of the apron there is a well carved fleur-de-lis and the front feet are scrolled while the back feet are out turned. Panetieres were often placed above the Petrin. They held the baked bread loaves. With its classical French country carvings and warm walnut patina, this interesting piece can be used for storage as an elevated trunk, and a console table or buffet. It will add warmth and elegance to any room.
CONDITION: Very good. Old restorations, minor rubs, and scratches, minor losses of wood to burls on back, traces of old wood worm.
