This beautifully detailed antique French fireback depicts a herder playing his flute and holding his staff in a field under a fruit bearing tree. There are two farm animals to either side of him and to the far right is a fountain. At the top of the fireback outlining the shape, are two splendid dolphins with a shell at the center. Scrolling rinceau and beading surround the scene. It dates to the 1800s. Fireplaces are never considered complete unless it has a cast iron fireback. These were first used around 500 years ago as a way to reflect heat back into the room. It also protects masonry, reflects light from the flames, and adds visual warmth and interest to the fireplace. These can also be used as ornamentation on walls and above stovetops.
CONDITION: Good, strong condition with losses of paint and minor wear to bottom of fireback.
