Hand-carved in Italy, this limestone plaque depicts a pair of rampant ibex in front of an expansive grapevine. This scene is most likely an interpretation of a sixth-century Sasanian (Persian) stucco plaque that can be seen in the Louvre.

The pierced background indicates that the stone carver is a master-level artisan, able to delicately excise small portions of the stone to render a visually stunning work of art. A cavetto border, embellished with fluting, encircles the rectangular stone, giving additional flair. The stone has a lovely cream patina, allowing the plaque to be paired with just about any color palette. Our limestone plaque of rampant ibex can be incorporated architecturally into a wall or used as an amazing sculptural piece of art either indoors or outside.

CONDITION: Very good condition. Intentional distress marks, presenting as minor nicks. There is a light pencil stain on the top edge. Limestone is a natural material that can change color with exposure to the elements.
