Made from iron and brass, this 5-kilogram scale comes from France during the 1800’s. French scales of this type were used in stores for weighing produce. The cast iron base has two marks underneath the scale arms. The imprint on the left says “FORCE”, the French word for strength, while the right side is stamped “5 KILO G”.

The central mechanism, which consists of a series of scrolls, is used to determine the weight of the object(s) in the item bowl. Standard masses would then be added to the flat weight pan until the needle “floats” in the middle of the scrolls; this perfect equilibrium gives you the weight of the object.

Both the weight pan and the item bowl rest gently on four-prong brackets. The pan and bowl are brass but have rolled steel rims. Soldering marks are visible where the brass and steel were fused together.

A scale like this can be used again today or simply placed as a unique French antique decorative accessory.

CONDITION: Good antique condition with minor buildup to scale base. Fleabite losses to weight pans with light denting. Scale may need to be recalibrated to function properly, however, the scale does not include weights.
