This large trunk from the Basque Country dates to mid 17th century. It is made from wonderful old thick planks of oak, and the ornamentation is typical of that period and region. Basque country is located in the western Pyrenees, straddling the border between France and Spain. The interior of the trunk has been lined with various scraps of paper from a much later time period. A lock plate is at the top front, and the feet are relatively simple, shaped platform feet. Overall, this trunk has a wonderful feel to it, especially due to the beautiful wood boards, joinery, and interlacing circular floret carving along the front.
CONDITION: Good overall antique condition with age separations, losses to wood in areas, nicks, one iron strap missing on back of trunk, no key, all commensurate with age of 1650.
