"Le Facteur Rural", The Country Postman
The postman was a new position in 19th century France, of certain importance, especially in the eyes of the people living in the country. This person embodied the state itself. In this charming lithograph, we see the postman sitting happily at the end of the table with a mail satchel around his belly and glass of wine in hand. All of the women and children in the room listen intently. The rest of the scene is filled with beautiful genre detail including a large Gothic fireplace, wall mounted lavabo, pets, and more.
CONDITION: Good overall condition with some yellowing of paper around edges, wear to giltwood frame.
