From Italy, this fabulous, beautifully hand carved walnut wood trunk was made in the 1600’s. The top and sides have no decoration, reserving the attention for the elaborate front panel. There is a linear carved molding on its front edge. At the center of the front panel is a cartouche with stylized dolphins on either side. Note, their tails are flowers with the centers having a heart motif. To either side of this are two acanthus leaf scrolls with abundantly carved fruit and flowers at the centers. Plain pilasters are at either end of the panel. The border along the front base is a motif of gadrooned thumb lobes. The front feet are paws, and the back feet are block. Inside of the trunk is a valuables box with lid to the left.
This Italian trunk is typical of late Renaissance pieces from the 1600’s and it will definitely be a topic of conversation wherever it is placed.
CONDITION: Old restorations, areas of missing wood, abrasions, age separations, old wood worm damage all commensurate with a piece from the 1600’s.
