Code 316-16 An Antique Blue and White Vase from Savona, Italy
This antique Savona urn has a depiction of a large mythological castle with a smaller one behind it on a landscaped surround. A flock of birds is flying overhead. The reverse side is a large stylized version of a family’s mark (lighthouse) for their factory in Savona (The Levantino Family). Surrounding the mark are stylized scrolling vines with leaves. Twin snake handles are on either side tied together with a blue and white ribbon. Two tiny weep holes are at the base of the urn.
"Antique Savona" decoration was introduced in the mid-seventeenth century by the Genoese painter Giovanni Antonio Guidobono, mainly of biblical scenes, with cherubs and mythological landscapes, surrounded by stylized plants on cloudy backgrounds. It was executed in monochrome blue on white or more rarely coloured.
CONDITION: Very good antique condition; minor rubs on handles, slight glaze imperfection over castle .
