The German born artist, Treddup Jr., has mastered the lighting in this painting. This entrancing scene depicts a port at twilight, with the moon peeking through the clouds, backlighting everything. Charles Frederick Tredupp and his son Charles Frederick Tredupp Jr. were born in Germany, and moved to the United States in 1888. They both enjoyed painting mystical evening landscape and seascape paintings.
The play on light in this small oil painting is fantastic, and the details are very well executed. Note the people walking along the pier in their early 1900’s clothing, the steamship in the distance, and the two sailboats departing into the night. The painting is held by an elegant giltwood frame, which adds great contrast to the dark evening sky. It is signed and dated, 1913.
CONDITION: Very good condition. Minor surface buildup to varnish.
