This pair of tin glazed earthenware or Italian Majolica pots were originally used for holding apothecaries’ ointments or dry drugs. Albarello is the Italian name of this type of majolica vessel. The pair shown below are late 19th century, and they have been embellished with hand painted, colorful, floral and foliate motifs over a white ground. At the top and bottom are peripheral yellow motifs with three circular blue lines beneath the top. These colorful jars can be used for dried flowers or for a variety of items or simply as accessories on their own.
CONDITION: Good overall condition with minor chips to glaze on top and the base of one of the jars.
