Code 214-25 18th Century Walnut Wood Commode from France
This elegant antique French Louis XV style commode comes from the region of Lyon and was made by a country cabinet maker in the 1700’s. When this piece was made, the Lyon cabinetmaker did not include the new fashion in furniture from Paris of the Rocaille. Ornamentation was still kept to an orderly structure with little or no motif, and especially not the Rocaille with its twisted and exuberant scrolls and shells. Rocaille motifs were to come later in the century for the Lyonnais cabinetmaker and even then, architectural structure was still maintained in the body shape.
This three drawer Lyonnais commode has a discreetly bowed front. There are simple, shaped, raised panel moldings on its drawers, asymmetrically shaped side panel moldings and rounded corner asymmetrical panel moldings. The hardware is made of bronze with beautiful detail.
CONDITION: Previous restorations, rubs, nicks, scratches, some losses and gouges to wood, traces of old woodworm, age separations, no keys, all commensurate with age.
