This stunning pair of Empire style giltwood, gilt metal, and black painted sconces is from Italy. They each feature graceful lyre shapes of eagles’ necks tied together with a drapery swag, acanthus leaves and a central shell on foliate base at the bottom. Projecting from this are three scrolling acanthus leaf arms with candleholders at the ends. Behind all of this, is the depiction of the strings of the lyre and the shape of a trumpet. The lyre is a string instrument, popular in Greek antiquity, while the Eagle was an imperial emblem. The regal gold and black, often used during the Empire Period, will make these sconces very visible against any wall. These were made in Italy in the 1900s.
