This captivating antique Italian marble and alabaster sculpture depicts a man and a woman sitting upon a bench with a platform for the feet. An lion bust having one leg and paw is at the right end of the bench. The woman is pointing downward towards something on the platform, while the man has his arm around her back with his other hand holding his head. There is an incised figure of a fish on the bench’s platform where she is pointing, with a small hole at its nose.
The figures both have detailed, draping garments, requiring excellent carving skills by the artist. The sculpture is signed PUGI on the left bottom back. Guglielmo Pugi (born 1850) and his two sons were Forentine sculptors and exhibited several works in the World Fairs at the turn of the century (Circa 1890-1910). Magnificent to view, this impressive Italian marble and alabaster sculpture will grace any surface it is placed upon.
