This pair of cast stone hunting dogs is based on an original 19th century iron sculpture. The original would have been done by a French “Animalier”, which was an artist that specialized in painting or sculpting realistic portrayals of animals.
The large dogs seen here are in a seated position, resting on elliptical bases. The first dog is collarless with the collar laying on the ground beneath one of the forepaws. The second dog still has its collar around the neck and has dropped a bird on the ground. Both dogs are shown with front dewclaws and docked tails. Minute details such as musculature and skeletal positioning have also been accurately depicted. The most realistic aspect might be the faces, with eyes that seem to look directly at the viewer. They are cast from a special mixture of crushed limestone, bluestone, and cement.
These handsome French cast stone hunting dogs can be placed outdoors in a garden, by a pool, or flanking an entry.
CONDITION: Good condition. Recent production with minor wear and rubs.
