This cast stone plaque at nearly 4 1/2 feet long, is a decorative Bacchanalian relief which depicts putti making wine. The plaque is composed of a mixture of three types of crushed stone and cement, and it has been given an antique stone patina. Dionysus, the Greek god of wine and festivity (also known as Bacchus to the Romans), often hosted massive celebrations called bacchanals. In these bacchanals, the putti represented fertility, abundance, and spirit of life and they were often depicted in wild revelry. The drunken, celebrating putti reinforced the dangers of excesses. Those putti that were not engaged in debauchery were often depicted as tending to the vine, such as the ones in this plaque.

Wonderful to look at and study, this versatile decorative element could hang anywhere, inside or out.

CONDITION: Very good condition. Rubs and minor nicks to certain areas (see photos) and uneven coloring in areas to mimic age. There is a metal hoop embedded into the back for hanging.
