Code 115-6 A Beautiful French Marble Topped Natural Wood Console from the Regence Period (1715-1723)
This elegant period Regence wall console has the original shaped marble top over a conforming frieze that has deeply carved acanthus leaf and shell motifs. The shaped sides, narrow in front and wider at the back continue with more deeply carved acanthus leaf motifs. The sinuous, attenuated s-scroll legs end in acanthus leaf scrolls, with hoof motifs for the out-turned feet. Notice where the legs begin under the frieze, there is a small c-scroll turning graciously under the frieze. Throughout this piece, small details such as this indicate the hands of a master carver sculpted it. There is a stylized pilaster at the back center with a raised round motif at the middle. A small shelf connects this piece to the two front legs at their narrowest point.
The design of this console is extremely elegant, a particular attribute to the furniture in the Regence period. Period Regence furnishings are rare. This small wall console with its original marble top will be a fabulous addition to any home.
