Hand-carved in the 1600s, this wooden coat of arms cartouche depicts an ornate crest atop a shaped console with several charges. The cartouche is Dutch, considerably predating the formation of the present-day Netherlands.

A visored helmet with an expansive foliate plume forms the crown that sits on top of the heraldic display. Leaf husks, volutes, and C-scrolls surround a shield that depicts a rampant lion reaching towards an eight-point star. The well-carved wood has a dark brown hue with some traces of green paint, indicating that there was a different finish at one point. This might have been part of a larger piece of furniture or art originally, but it has since been mounted to a more contemporary painted black stand with thin molding. Our unique Dutch wooden cartouche can be displayed on a mantel, bookshelf, or table in any room of the house.

CONDITION: Good antique condition. Minor nicks and losses, with some light age separations. The cartouche has been mounted to a more recent painted wooden stand. Areas, most noticeably the helmet, have traces of green paint, possibly from a removed finish.
