Based after the famous Apollo Belvedere statue, this Italian marble bust was hand-carved in the 1800’s. The original, full-body statue carved around 120 AD, depicts the god, Apollo, immediately after launching an arrow.

Our Apollo can be seen wearing a chlamys, which was a cloak often worn in antiquity. Apollo has the chlamys clasped on the right shoulder, much in the style that ancient Greeks and Romans wore them. Beneath the cloak a portion of the strap of his quiver set can be seen. The bust sits on top of a marble plinth with gray mottling and black inclusions. The circular plinth has thick quarter round molding, providing a very stable base.

For centuries, the whereabouts of the original statue was unknown, until it resurfaced in Italy in the late 15th century. The statue is now on display at the Vatican Museum, specifically the Octagonal Court of the Museo Pio-Clementino. When a classical bust such as this is placed in the right spot, it can instantly elevate and add sophistication to the entire room.

CONDITION: Good antique condition with fleabites and minor losses. Light buildup, specifically to Apollo’s hair.
