This large limestone sundial with wrought iron armillary sphere will make a grand statement in any garden. Sometimes called an “equatorial sundial”, the armillary was invented by ancient Greeks. In its original format, armillary spheres were earth-centric, which is how the Greeks believed the universe functioned. Over the centuries, armillary spheres have been altered to reflect scientific advancements.
The wrought iron armillary has an arrow-shaped gnomon which indicates the time of the day. As the sun moves across the sky, the gnomon casts a shadow over a series of roman numerals affixed to a half ring with scrolled ends. The base of the armillary has four scrolled legs that sit on top of a circular stone pedestal.
Beneath the plinth is an urn-shaped limestone body that has been hand-carved by a master Italian mason. The highly carved neck of the urn has four scrolls that sit above a series of goat head mascarons with fruited garland swags emanating from their mouths. The base of the body is adorned with large acanthus leaves while the foot has a repeating lotus leaf motif. The foot sits on a large circular plinth that is comprised of four quadrants.
At over seven feet tall, our hand carved Italian limestone sundial with wrought iron armillary will make wonderful addition to any garden or courtyard project.
CONDITION: Very good condition with minor rubs to stone. Roman numeral V has been re-attached. In theory, when used in the Northern hemisphere, the gnomon needs to be aligned with True North in order to function as a sundial.
