The motifs on this piece were very finely carved by Normandy craftsmen of the late 1700’s. Like many furnishings from Normandy, this buffet a deux corps (two bodied buffet) is carved from French oak, and features a large basket of fruit and leaves as its central crowning ornament. Trailing from the sides of the basket are delicate vines carved en relief. Two glass paneled doors allow one to view the painted interior with shaped shelves. Some might refer to a piece like this as a “Buffet Deux Corps Vitre”.

By studying the rest of the overall form and details of the piece, we see that it is the Norman regional interpretation of the Louis XV style which was so successful in Paris, just 20-30 years prior. It has a curving crown piece, carved blooms of roses, spigs of flowered leaves, and berries in the corners. The feet are substantial double scrolls in the front, and blocks in the back. Linear moldings, floral vines, and simple side panels adorn the rest of the piece.

The lower buffet opens to reveal a dark blue painted interior with two drawers. Both sections of the piece have working locks and keys. Unusual, in that it is painted, this beautiful piece from Normandy can be used as storage and display anywhere in the home.

CONDITION: Good antique condition commensurate with age: abrasions to paint all over, minor losses to wood, age separations.
