This phenomenal enameled copper and ebonized wood table box was made by Alphonse Giroux in Paris, circa 1850. Each of the expertly enameled grisaille scenes show decorative elements from antiquity. This style of art on enameled copper was perfected in the 16th century in the town of Limoges which is in the department of Limousin France. Artisans of Limousin in the 1500's used powdered glass in the enameling process which gave great depth and luminosity to the copper panels. This was one of the great French art forms during the Renaissance.

Our table trunk or Coffret is adorned on each side with these type of copper panels. They are slightly curved outward, and they're framed by gilded bronze. The case of the box is ebonized wood. On the top is a portrait of a Renaissance woman within a cartouche having a scrolling rinceau surround. Other motifs include a lion, mascarons, and stylized dolphins. The interior has been lined with a lush blue silk velvet. All this rests upon four toupe feet.

This piece was made by the Maison Alphonse Giroux (inscribed along inner front bronze plate). In 1799, Maison Alphonse Giroux was established by Francois-Simon-Alphonse Giroux, who was an art restorer, cabinet maker and one of the restorers for the Notre Dame Cathedral. The business quickly expanded into a luxury goods boutique, attracting the attention of the French kings and members of the royal family. Following the purchase of a small writing desk at the Universal Exhibition in 1855, Napoleon, III bought several other items of furniture and accessories, including clocks, candelabras, from Giroux for the Compiegne Palace. This highly talented family manufactured and retailed multiple types of luxury items in the 19th century.
