EARLY STAFFORDSHIRE TRANSFERWARE MUG
HANNIBAL PASSING or CROSSING THE ALPS
possibly Knight, Elkins & Co. Potteries
Staffordshire England
c 1830
This is whimsical little transferware mug, circa 1830. This diminutive piece stands 1 3/4 " tall x 2 " wide with an applied acanthus style loop handle. The mug is very light weight and beautifully potted with a pearlware glaze.
It is transfer printed in blue over white and shows two Carthaginian soldiers at the Alps mountain pass. The pattern repeats on the other side as well as along the handle and inside the miniature mug.
The condition of this exceptional mug is EXCELLENT, clean and bright, appears to have never been used. Nicely potted and the transfers were applied with a good deal of attention to detail. Early mugs of this quality, condition and pattern are quite scarce and highly sought after.
