English Ironstone Commemorative WHITTLE-LE-WOOD Ox Roast Plate 1887

This printed ironstone plate dates to the year 1887. Made and sold as a souvenir commemorative of Queen Victori’s Jubilee. The plate measures 9-3/4 inches across. It hails from the village of Whittle-le-Woods, a village in Lancashire, England, a village made famous for its annual ox roasts. The plate celebrates the momentous occasion of the Queen’s attendance at the roast.

Both the lettering and decorative illustration is transfer-printed in brown. A gorgeous image of a beautiful oxen to celebrate the event. Also an imaginative decorative accessory for a kitchen or bakery ironstone collection.

The plate was made by the Hancock manufactory in Stoke on Trent Staffordshire England c1887. The maker was known for its Victorian commercial advertising wares made to order for shop-fitters and retailers. A sturdy plate meant for heavy duty use and easily adaptable to a country kitchen or a contemporary butcher shop.

The plate is in great condition as shown with no chips cracks or repairs. Light wear to the rims as expected with age and prior use. The workmanship is meant to be durable. The transfers are distinct and the inclusion of a gigantic ox head is very desirable. A great example, offered as is.
This display plate will complete a stunning collection. Very popular with the American market today although made for the purely local English trade.
