STAFFORDSHIRE TRANSFERWARE PLATTER ~ AESOP'S FABLES 1835

RARE GREEN STAFFORDSHIRE TRANSFERWARE PLATTER

AESOP'S FABLES
THE CROW AND THE PITCHER

Copeland and Garrett ~ New Blanche
Staffordshire, England
1833 - 1847

This small outstanding and rare platter measures 8 1/2 " long x 6 1/4 " wide. It is crisply transfer printed in green.

The platter has a wonderful irregularly scalloped edge and a border pattern of trios of large flowers separated by hydrangea blossoms. The corners are filled with Fox heads and wild roses. Wonderful moulded handles

The central image illustrates the fable by Aesop:

In a spell of dry weather, when the Birds could find very little to drink, a thirsty Crow found a pitcher with a little water in it. But the pitcher was high and had a narrow neck, and no matter how he tried, the Crow could not reach the water. The poor thing felt as if he must die of thirst.
Then an idea came to him. Picking up some small pebbles, he dropped them into the pitcher one by one. With each pebble the water rose a little higher until at last it was near enough so he could drink.

The Moral of the Story: In a pinch a good use of our wits may help us out.
The platter displays beautifully and is in great condition.
