Transferware Series Ware Cabinet Plate Months of the Year ~ September
Wedgwood England 1896
This transfer printed Wedgwood cabinet rack plate measures 10 3/8” in diameter. It is finely potted earthenware (not porcelain ) featuring a dimensional 6" square ‘tile’ in the center. The plate is polychrome multi-color transfer printed in brown and decorated with brilliant brick red blue and green. The border is decorated in Florentine, a popular pattern in late 19th century Wedgwood dinner ware.
The Aesthetic Movement center tile shows a young woman picking apples or orange. The winsome scene is finely detailed, with two birds sitting on the brick wall behind the tree and a basket of fruit on the ground. The plate is titled “SEPTEMBER”. It is one of a series of seasonal scenes depicting the 12 months of the year, designed in the 1880s by Helen Miles. The images of the months were produced by Wedgwood in the Staffordshire region of England and were found on tiles along with a variety of plates and other shapes.
The plate is marked “WEDGWOOD ETRURIA ENGLAND” along with “FLORENTINE”. It also has an impressed Wedgwood mark. It also has a paint decorators number A4358.
Never Used. The plate is in perfect condition without chips cracks or repairs.
This spectacular plate with naturalistic imagery is a stunning addition to any collection of seasons series ware plates or transferware images of country life.
