Stunning Polychrome Transferware Vegetable Tureen
Brownfield and Sons ~ Staffordshire, England ~ c. 1885
This is a fabulous long covered vegetable tureen, perfect for asparagus or french green beans, that is crisply transfer printed in brown with exciting hand colored under glaze painting in cobalt blue, green and golden orange lustre. The large piece measures 12 1/4 " long x 8 3/4 " wide x 5 1/2 " tall including applied handle. The piece is decorated in an Art Deco pattern with a naturalistic inspiration, a kaleidoscopic design of stylized feathers and geometric designs.
The decoration is brilliant and exciting. The piece was made by Brownfield Potteries in the Staffordshire region of England. It is marked with decorator's marks.
Never Used. The piece is in great condition, bright clean and shiny. A very small chip under the glaze along the underside of the rim which happened during the potting of the tureen. Early large pieces in this wonderful pattern don't come along often, and the contrast and composition is especially beautiful.
