Vintage Artist Paint Color Salesman Sample Pottery Plate

Cookson Ceramics Ltd for Heraeus Co of Hanau Germany

Stoke on Trent Staffordshire England c1960

This vintage ceramic paint sample plate measures 10.50 inches in diameter. It represents a selection of colors sold in kiln fired enamel paints that were made for pottery and porcelain decoration. The blank porcelain plate was fabricated by one of the potteries in Staffordshire England, and it was printed with a color spectrum of 22 brilliant colors to demonstrate the use of colors and range when applied to porcelain (in this case, with a firing range of 780 – 880 degrees centrigrade.) The plate was made for the Heraeus Corporation in Hanau Germany. It was made by Cookson Ceramics, who operated a ceramic color and glaze company in Staffordshire until the takeover in 1963 by ceramic colors and coatings specialist Johnson Matthey. The plate is part social, art and industrial history and part interior design.

Test/Color Sample Plates were made to support the pottery industry including pottery manufacturers, schools and retailers, providing a guide for painters and potters to ensure consistency in colors, for practice work or to show colors to customers. They were used to market the range of coatings and enamel glazes available to the Potteries and factories in Staffordshire and world-wide. They would have been displayed in the store or showroom and used as a color wheel like a catalog, carried by paint salesmen. These plates were not available to buy. This particular plate was decorated with the scene from Cinderella, one of the early fairy tales by Grimm.

The plate is in great condition with no chips cracks fades or repairs. A couple of superficial utensil scratches, as shown. Offered as is.

The plate is a unique, one of a kind art piece perfect for the artist potter or anyone with an artistic flair. The colorful piece displays beautifully, and would light up any work space wall. We have listed other test color sample plates -- collect several of them to form a very unusual collectors item, or art studio/interior design/shop prop.
