BROWN STAFFORDSHIRE TRANSFERWARE PLATE

CANOVA

Staffordshire, England c. 1840

This outstanding large plate measures 10 1/2” wide and is crisply transfer printed in a very dark chocolate brown.

Wonderful scalloped edge. The central image depicts an etruscan vase or urn in a classical setting. The exquisite urn is surrounded by wonderful flowers and cartouches of exotic landscapes. This plate was produced by either Thomas Mayer or George Phillips, both potteries in Longport in the Staffordshire district of England.

Condition is outstanding. The contrast and composition is especially beautiful in this rich deep dark brown color.
