Superb Hannibal Passing the Alps Red Transferware Plate ~ 1830
OUTSTANDING EARLY RED TRANSFERWARE PLATE
HANNIBAL PASSING THE ALPS
Knight, Elkins & Co. Potteries
This spectacular 10 1/4” wide plate is beautifully transfer printed in red. The rim has a wonderful scalloped edge with pendant sprays of flowers separating arched reserves with elephants and horses and warriors with spears.
The central scene shows a struggle between a Carthaginian soldier on horseback and a roman warrior, as a horse rears in fright. An elephant carrying a covered howdah is behind the horseman. Soldiers appear in the mountain pass. There are pine trees on either side of the scene which is really dominated by the towering ice and snow covered Alps mountains.
Never Used. The plate is in excellent condition, with no chips, no cracks, no hairlines and no repairs. Clean shiny and bright, its an incomparable piece that doesn't come on the market very often.
