SUPERB Brown Transferware Large Charger Platter ~ HOLLYHOCK 1880
HOLLYHOCK FLOWERS WITH BIRD
Choisy le Roi
Luneville, France c 1880
This stunning transferware ornd platter or charger is a wonderful piece of 19th century transferware! The large platter measures 12 3/4 " in diameter and is transfer printed in chocolate brown.
It is imaginatively decorated with a twig rope with small leaves along the rim encircling a flower stem of Hollyhock flowers and a branch with a perched bird. The image is based on a gorgeous copperplate engraving.
The piece resembles the transferware made in the Staffordshire region of England in the early to mid 19th century, but instead it was made by Choisy le Roi (late Creil Monereau) one of the faienceries in the Luneville region of France. French aesthetic pottery is full of whimsy and usually birds, flowers or fruit.
Condition is great, appears to have never been used and clean shiny and bright. No chips, no cracks, no hairlines and no repairs. Tiny thumb smudge of extra ink near the flower.
