8 AESTHETIC DARK BROWN TRANSFERWARE PLATES

MELBOURNE PATTERN

Gildea and Walker Potteries

Tunstall, Staffordshire England

c. 1883

These Victorian aesthetic 8 1/8 " plates are transfer printed in very dark brown. The clear and crisp MELBOURNE pattern features delightful Japanesque geometric designs mixed with exotic palm trees and other tropicals. A shoreline with sailing vessels set to the horizon while a large flock of birds fly by.

An inset cartouche of a large winged Heron in flight within a Star and quarter Moon landscape and another inset of a Egyptian type butterflies circling a flower. This pattern has everything going for it. The pattern displays the victorian eras love of the exotic.

The pieces are marked on the underside with an impressed registration mark, the pattern name and trademark that identifies the maker as Gildea and Walker, a pottery maker working in Tunstall in the Staffordshire region of England during the 19th century.

Good condition, clean shiny and bright. No chips, no cracks, no hairlines and no repairs.
