This is a stunning transferware tureen dating to 1883. The covered sauce tureen measures 7 1/4 " long x 5 " wide x 5 " tall. The color is a rich sepia or wonderful dark chocolate brown. The pattern is named PALMYRA, featuring a fantastic wide, busy band of sunflowers with a background of geometric shapes. Two cartouches are flower pots full of oversized sunflowers surrounded by rows of buttercups and geometrical flourishes. Highlights of striped golden luster.
The pieces are marked on the underside with an impressed registration mark and the pattern name the intials that identifies the maker as Sampson Hancock, a pottery maker working in the Staffordshire region of England from 1858-1891.
Appears to have never been used. Three small chips along the bottom of the base. A well potted piece, with richly detailed transfers reflecting the Victorian love of nature.
