Victorian QUACK Medicine ~ Lip Salve ~ 1880
Rare Small Size
Genuine Victorian Transfer Printed Ointment Pot Lid Crock
England c. 1880
This is a rare find, a fabulous little transferware ointment pot or crock, circa 1880. It once contained a secret preparation developed by Victorian chemists for the cure of all tender lip issues. The snake oil ingredients consisted of various and occasionally hideous ingredients ranging from whale sperm to poisonous mercury.
Rare Size. The tiny crock stands a mere 1 " tall and 1 3/4 " wide. It is nicely potted with a precision cut rim and base along with a crisp, finely applied transfer. It is in good condition with a chip off the base and two small flakes off the bottom of the lid.
This diminutive medical piece is wildly amusing, a throwback to a much simpler and goofier time in the world of medicine. The piece will make a great addition to any collection of transfer printed advertising wares or quack medicines .
