AESTHETIC BROWN TRANSFERWARE PLATE
THE WORLD PATTERN ~ SHAKESPEARE + HATHAWAY
Wallis Gimson Potteries
Fenton, Staffordshire England
This large Victorian aesthetic 9" plate is transfer printed in very dark brown.
The clear and crisp WORLD pattern features an exotic geometric border with ferns, cherry blossoms and wild orchids surrounding two fabulous cartouches . One is of the room where Shakespeare was born and the other Anne Hathaway's cottage.
Hathaway married Shakespeare in November of 1582 while pregnant with his child. Hathaway was 26 years old when she married, whereas Shakespeare was only 18. This age difference, and Hathaway's pregnancy, has been used by some historians as evidence that this was a "shotgun wedding" forced on a reluctant Shakespeare by Hathaway's family.
The piece is marked on the underside with an impressed registration mark, the pattern name the intials L.S. & S. and the Beehive trademark that identifies the maker as Wallis Gimson, a pottery maker working in Fenton in the Staffordshire region of England from 1884-1890.
Light wear but otherwise Excellent. No chips, no cracks, no hairlines and no repairs.
