AESTHETIC BROWN TRANSFERWARE CAKE or SANDWICH PLATE

MELROSE PATTERN

Ashworth Brothers Potteries

Hanley Staffordshire England

c. 1884

This large Victorian aesthetic 10 " wide cake platter is transfer printed in dark brown.

The clear and crisp MELROSE pattern features rich and wildly exotic Japanesque designs with a plethora of native rugosa rose flowers, rose buds and foliage. A songbird sings as it watches a pair of Butterflies.

A very ornate geometric scroll separates a cartouche of a pair of exciting Egrets in flight over a marshland. The designs are the height of the aesthetic movement and the victorian eras love of nature.

Great condition, a small line at the rim from normal shrinkage at the pottery kiln.
