Red Aesthetic Transferware Plate ~ WATER HEN 1890

Charles Allerton & Sons Potteries

Staffordshire, England c.1890

This children's transferware plate dates to c.1890. Originally part of a complete children’s or miniature transferware tea set, the color is a rich red against a creamy white earthenware.

The plate measure about 5 3/8" in diameter and features a water hen or Guinea Hen (the English name for the American Coot ) feeding in a lily pond with cat tails and reeds. The background is an aesthetic composition of lush flowers, swallows, and an inset of a castle. There is a zig zag patterned trim along the rim.
The pattern is pictured and discussed in Lorraine Punchard's Playtime Porcelain and Pottery as well as Petra Williams' Romantic Staffordshire.

The plate is in great condition, with no chips cracks or repairs considering it is 125 years old!. The plate has the usual imperfections associated with these early primitive children's wares, with minor transfer wrinkles and glaze crazing original to the making.
