Rare Earthenware Aesthetic Movement Plate
Fontaine / Aesops Fables ~ FARMER AND BIRDS
Brown Westhead and Moore Potteries
Staffordshire England ~ c. 1880
This is a superb and quite scare transferware plate registered around 1880. The plate measures 10 3/8 " in diameter. The plate is finely potted. The decoration is based on a woodcut etching from the highly coveted Nature series made by Brown Westhead and Moore, most commonly found on architectural tiles. It is decorated in a brilliant cobalt blue or flow mulberry.
The central image features a Farmer sowing his field as a large group of Jackdaw birds sit in wait just beyond pebble slinging range. The farmer tricking the birds into thinking he would be filling his sling with bread instead filled it with stones.
LESSON: Beware the sort of person who uses tricks.
The plate is in EXCELLENT condition, with no chips, cracks, hairlines or repairs. The tiniest of a flea bite speck off the bottom outer rim for complete clarification. The images are clear and crisp with intricate detail and whimsical styling. The plate was made with great attention to detail. This fantastic transferware plate will make a gorgeous addition to any serious collection of Aesthetic movement wares and would be a fabulous gift for rabbit / turtle collectors.
