This is the nicest Ice Capades brooch I have ever seen! It is done in gold plated metal with enameled accents, including the banner which reads ICE CAPADES (see photos). It is in excellent condition and measures 2 inches by 2 inches at its widest. It features a graceful ice skater and was probably made in the early 1940's. This is a real piece of entertainment history.
History: The Ice Capades were founded in 1940 and featured traveling entertainment shows with theatrical ice skating performances. Showcased were former Olympic and US National Champion figures.
Mr. Harris, one of the original founders, hired the legendary skater Sonja Henie to perform between periods of hockey games in Pittsburgh beginning in 1936. Her performances created a sensation and from this popularity was born the Ice Capades. It was officially founded in February, 1940, in Hershey, Pennsylvania by nine men who called themselves the Arena Managers Association. Each was in charge of a venue where the skaters began performing in cites across the U. S. The group's first performance was four months after its founding, on June 16, 1940 at New Orleans Municipal Auditorium. The Ice Capades was an American fixture for over 50 years; the show went out of business around 1995.
