In 1810, following his divorce from Josephine and after considerable deliberation, the emperor Napoleon married Marie Louise of Austria. The event was memorialized in the numerous medallions and coins that were produced to celebrate the royal marriage. This design was the most popular pattern. Done in a matte gold tone, this brooch measures 2 1/4 inches in diameter. It has a bale, so it can also be worn as a pendant. It is unsigned although many companies, including Trifari and Monet, made similar brooches using this design. Notice that it is as detailed on one side as the other; the medallion is prong set within the frame. Overall condition is fine with a bit of a bend noted in the pin back. Interesting piece!
