Highly stylized cicada brooch features a black enameled finish in a shiny, gold plated setting. This is a large and substantial brooch, measuring 2 inches long by 1 1/4 inches at its widest. It is signed on the reverse "BW" as shown. It is in fine condition with no issues. Nicky Butler & Simon Wilson began making jewelry in the late 1960's in England. Their partnership broke up in the 1990's, with Wilson retaining the B&W name. Their jewelry is fantastic and well made and exemplified by this quote from them: "We never did subtle."
Cicadas have been featured in literature since the time of Homer's Iliad, and as motifs in art from the Chinese Shang dynasty. They have been used in myths and folklore to represent carefree living and immortality.
