A most unusual find from a 1950's company named "La Rel," about which very little is known. This set features a fabulous brooch with amber-colored and tan and white striped cabochons; it also has 3 rows of smoked topaz rhinestones encircling the center cabochon. The earrings feature matching stones and are clip style; just the earrings are signed.
Most of the La Rel jewelry I have seen is made up of crystal clear rhinestones and includes brooches, earrings, necklaces, and bracelets. One may occasionally find colored rhinestones in La Rel jewelry; however, I have never seen anything like this set. It resembles Schreiner jewelry in its uniqueness, including the way the brooch is built up (it sits 1 1/2 inches high!) and the use of unusual stones. This is a fabulous statement set and I am comfortable using the word "rare" to describe it.
The brooch measures 2 1/2 inches by 2 inches by 1 1/2 inches; and the clip style earrings measures 1 1/2 inches by 1 inch. Overall condition is fine with a trace of wear to 2 spots on the brooch's plating. Please see the second photograph for details.
Very little is known about the company except that their jewelry first appeared in 1953 and was sometimes signed "La Rel Originals." It is not known how long the company was in business, when their operations ceased, or where the headquarters was located.
