For sale is this Victorian era Vegetable Ivory Carved Needle Case with a Stanhope of St. Sebastian, the Roman Martyr. The egg measures over 2 1/2" high and opens as shown. Nicely carved all around, it has no chips, damage or repairs. The stanhope of St. Sebastian is clean and clearly shows the arrows in the Saint's chest that were done in an attempt to kill him for helping martyrs in the Roman army (circa 350 a.d.). Although originally made as a sewing piece, it can surely be used for holding other items such as a rosary. It weighs 26.9 grams. Vegetable ivory is the inner seed of the South American ivory palm, and is thus completely made of cellulose.
