For sale is this absolutely beautiful, circa 1860's, yellow gold filled Bacchante Cameo brooch. The frame measures 1 5/8" x 1 1/2" and as you can see it is a full frontal carving done in a high relief. There are the typical grape vines, leaves and bunches or grapes in her hair, hence the name Bacchante, which was the name given to female followers of the god of wine and fertility Bacchus/Dionysus. The piece weighs 18.7 grams and has no cracks or damage. The clasp has been replaced with a roll over safety clasp to prevent loss and her nose is carved poorly as are most lava cameos of this age.
April is Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Month; a portion of my sales will go to our local SPCA.
