Offered is a vintage, c. 1919 Carousel Face or Mask in the form of a female, made by Herschell Spillman.
Made of solid cast iron (a magnet is attracted), these were featured on many carousels made by Spillman in the 1st quarter of the 20th century. If you search for old carousels, you can often see the faces at the top of the outer carousel ring, and sometimes on the inner rings or columns, too.
This one is said to come from a Kansas City, KS carousel, which I would imagine, no longer exists. So many of these old carousels were sold off for their parts.
The mask, while it has some rust, is in decent shape. The finish appears to be the original gold, and is not repainted. No cracks or chips and the crew holes are not compromised.
