We LOVE this collector's gem, and the outstanding lithograph illustrations in these stories are so true-to-life. Marjorie Flack has written and illustrated some of the most beloved children's books of the 20th century, and this is a very rare TWO-in-one first edition!!
Scarce 1935 out-of-print stated first edition, first printing vintage children's hardcover book - Topsy AND Angus and the Cat. Stories and pictures by Marjorie Flack. Two books in one, the story of Topsy the Spaniel puppy and the story of Angus the Scottie and the little cat .
Published by Junior Literary Guild, New York, Copyright: 1935, original stated first edition, first printing. Lithographed in the United States. Jerry City Printing company. Angus and the Cat was published in 1931. No isbn. NOT ex-library. Not later printing.
Marjorie Flack owned a Scottish Terrier named Angus who involved himself in a number of scrapes and/or experiences with other animals and people. In 1930, the first of the well-known "Angus" stories was published. Flack drew heavily on personal experience for many of her stories including her depiction of the cat (belonged to her daughter) who torments poor Angus.
Stunning lithograph color illustrations and pen and ink drawings. Charming brightly colored illustrated endpapers featuring dogs all over the pages and the little girl . Marjorie Flack's original illustrations were watercolor and tempera, and sometimes colored paper was used for extensive background areas. Drawings a combination of pencil, ink, paint and crayon on illustration board. Photos do not capture exact color hues; wait until you see. WOW!
ANGUS and the Cat: There was something outdoors Angus was very curious about but had never learned about, and that was CATS. The leash was too short. Angus is jealous of the cat at first and a little put out that he's not the "only child" any more. But, after learning more about the cat and feeling more secure in his home, Angus finds that the cat can be a good companion after all. Spectacularly well-written and really enjoy the way Angus and the Cat get along (or not) and eventually develop a friendship of sorts. The book is cleverly written and is a warm story of curiosity, differences, and friendship.
TOPSY is an adorable black Cocker Spaniel that a little girl wanted to bring home but her mother did not let her. Instead was brought home by a little old lady Samantha who lived by herself. Of course Topsy got into lots of mischief, tore up everything in the house including her shoes. One day while Topsy was playing outside, met up with Angus and her owner (the little girl who wanted to bring her home) and the lady gave her Topsy at the end. Have to love this CHARMING story!!
Marjorie Flack (22 October 1897 - August 29, 1958) award-winning artist and writer of children's picture books was also known for her popular book "The Story about Ping" (1933), popularized by Captain Kangaroo.
