Sarah and John, brother and sister start out their exciting adventure on the New York subway, and wake up in Dutch New York. How odd it is to be living in colonial times! They are rescued by an Indian Scout, and then live as members of a Dutch family.
The young adventurers are living in the midst of history. They meet Governor Peter Stuyvesant. They are on a Dutch ship under attack by the British, and see the English take New Amsterdam from the Dutch. But all the while Sarah and John wonder -- will they ever find the magic that leads back home?
The historical details are great fun (such as when the boy asks for a fork at dinner only to find, to his embarrassment, that even the governor doesn't own one), comparing colonial and modern ways of life. Lufkin's stunning illustrations really make the history come alive!
