For over twenty-five years, Washington hostesses have been borrowing Marny Clifford's recipes. When the recipes became too dog-eared to read, Mrs. Clifford, wife of former Secretary of Defense Clark Clifford, found herself making copies, and then more copies. Finally, at the urging of those who had enjoyed her justly famous parties and wanted to know the secrets of the delicious food she served, she agreed to put her recipe collection into book form. Destined to be as cherished as any of the famous standard cookbooks.

Gourmet in taste but uncomplicated in preparation, the recipes come from First Ladies, Embassies, Senators' and Generals' wives, from Marny Clifford's New England forebears, from friends, and from her foreign travels. Wealth of suggested menus for entertaining at brunches, lunches, buffet suppers, formal dinners, large parties of forty or more to intimate suppers for two; any one of which could establish a hostess's reputation for life. She also excelled at serving up authentic dishes from the Caribbean to Indonesia – very outré at the time.

Each of the more than 700 recipes has been tested so that even the cook with little experience will be able to follow her clear, uncomplicated instructions. Contents includes classic American cuisine, delicious international dishes, make a family meal, or a grand Souffle. Top it all of with the finest desserts.

Marny Clifford was reared in New England; Clark Clifford in St. Louis, for several decades, from the post-war ‘50s to the post-Vietnam ‘80s, served as an advisor to Presidents of both parties – Truman, Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon and Carter. They met in Germany, married, lived in St. Louis for thirteen years, moved to Washington in 1946. Before she married, she was a graduate of Fannie Farmer School of Cooking in Boston. In addition to cooking American food dishes that show her New England roots, she also served up authentic dishes from the Caribbean to Indonesia – very outré at the time.
