Scarce 1888 first edition hardcover antique book with decorative gilt cover accents - Editha's Burglar; A Story for Children by Frances Hodgson Burnett.

Publisher: Jordan Marsh & Co.,Boston, Copyright, 1888. True first edition, first state, Rand Avery imprint copyright page. Publisher advertisements rear for 3 books. Not ex-library. Full page frontispiece gravure print, black & white original photograph of little Elsie Leslie Lyde crouching beside chair (not sitting on it) playing Editha.

EXQUISITELY detailed single page black & white illustrations by world renowned artist Henry Sandham; each drawing a superb work of art. Photos do not fully capture tones & detail; wait until you see. Facsimile Letter: Jordan, Marsh & Company. Written as commission from Jordan Marsh Stores, Boston. Burnett also wrote the classic stories: The Secret Garden, Little Lord Fauntleroy & A Little Princess.

PLOT:

Editha tiny seven-year-old girl living with her wealthy parents in London. Her papa an editor busy with work, her mama a beauty busy socializing. Editha has no siblings and spends most of her time reading books and her papa's newspapers. She reads about burglars who break into homes. Editha hears sound of someone that night, she immediately knows it's a burglar. She goes downstairs and asks the burglar to please be quiet so that he doesn't frighten her mama!

Square octavo hardcover, forest green cloth boards, brilliant gilt accents and black embossed illustration. Provenance: "Miss Florence Butler" in pencil, dated Dec, 1888 on ffep. Amazing condition for over 100 years old.

Cover near fine/bright/clean-light shelfwear-corners very lightly bumped/light spine edgewear-little light occasional bubbling edge. Pages excellent/bright/clean/light wear-occasional light small smudge spot-very light yellowing. Fbep some light foxing-pencil inscription. Binding tight/very light wear-2pp light pulling-not separated/pp55 small crease top.
