Publication History: The first edition, May 1936 first printing was recalled and the book was officially published in June 1936, first edition, second printing retaining the original cover, gray cloth boards with BLUE SCROLL under title.
Margaret Mitchell's first and only published book, it took her ten years to complete. Story is set in Clayton County, Georgia and Atlanta. It brings the drama of the Civil War and the Reconstruction vividly to life, telling story of Scarlett O'Hara, spoiled and selfish daughter of a wealthy plantation owner.
Indelible portrait of a unique time and place in history, American's greatest political and moral conflict and myths that surround it. Mitchell vividly portrays disillusionment, devastation of war, ignorance of uninitiated, and transformation of arrogance into tenacity that shaped the first "new South."
David O. Selznick's classic Gone With The Wind film narrates the love between Scarlett O'Hara and Rhett Butler during American civil war. Shortly after publication, Selznick secured film rights for $50,000. Selznick International Pictures, distributed by Metro-Goldwyn Meyer. Sidney Howard screenplay. Directed by Victor Fleming.
Movie stars included Clark Gable, Vivian Leigh, Hattie McDaniel, Leslie Howard and Olivia de Havilland. Film won nine Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress.
