This clown/Pierrot boudoir doll is about 30” (75 cm) long and was a popular item during the 1920-30 period. His painted composition, swivel head is on the original cloth body. Body filled with cotton or kapok, has stitched fingers and separate thumb. His expressive face has large side glancing eyes, a big smile and painted teeth. The head has no damage, only some paintloss and scratches : please see pictures for condition. He wears his original costume made out of olive-green silk (?) with felt borders and a double layered collar in cotton, edged with black ribbon. He still has his original panties. Only one of the original papiermaché, golden shoes is left. The costume is faded in front and shows some stains and a couple of holes, but all these are minor faults that only add to the charm of this object. At the back, the body has an inscription in pencil : “Vichy Paris”. In all those years, he was sitting in the nursery home of the first owners and looked well after his mandolin. This mandolin is made out of wood and metal. The metal part is painted as wood and shows chips at the edge. At the back there is a mark, but I can’t read it. And now for the best part : this boudoir doll has still his original, working music box ! The box is mounted on a wooden base. Music plays loud and clear with several melodies, I sadly can’t recognize. The original key is still in place and the music also can be activated by a cord at the back of his head. A great find in completely original condition.
